The Van Buren Pointers came into the game against the Bentonville West Wolverines, fresh off a hard fought victory over the Siloam Springs Panthers. Bentonville West came into the game against the Pointers after having suffered some tough defeats over the first three weeks of the season. Both the Pointers and the Wolverines had the opportunity to grab some momentum and a much needed victory to kick off the conference slate.
For much of the first quarter, the Pointers would control the clock and punch the ball in the end zone. Van Buren would break a scoreless tie when Walter Green rushed it in from 9-yards out. The Pointers plan was to control the ball and the clock. The first drive was a great example of how Van Buren likes to control things on the offensive side of the ball.
Bentonville West would respond to the challenge that the Pointers laid out. The Wolverines would not take long to strike scoring in a little over a minute. Will Jarrett would connect on sophomore standout Jadon Jackson on a 63-yards touchdown pass to even the game at 7. Bentonville West would continue to put the pressure on the Pointers ringing up 28 unanswered points during the second and third quarters. Van Buren’s Walter Green would be on the receiving end of a 70-yard pass from quarterback Caleb Salisbury to make the score 28-14 Bentonville West.
Bentonville West would put up 14 more points during the fourth quarter and put the game out of reach 42-14. Bentonville West was able to defeat Van Buren 42-14 and in doing so grabbed the first victory in school history. The Wolverines first victory could not have come at a better time and gives them an early conference mark of 1-0. Bentonville West will now have to focus on the defending state champions Fayetteville Purple Dogs Friday. Van Buren will make the trip to Bentonville to take on the Tigers, who are fresh off an upset of Fayetteville and looking to start the conference season at 2-0.
